"For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink D&C 19:16-18 As members of (Jesus Christ's) Church we understand the deep significance of His Atonement, even though we cannot completely comprehend the miracle of it... Each time I reflect upon the ordeal of His Atonement, I realize that He didn't have to do it. He did it voluntarily. And for it, He was "despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquanted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3). All who are parents know the heartache felt when loved ones endure trials. The parents of Jesus were no exception. It is hard to comprehend the feelings of the Father who had to withdraw His spirit at His son's last hour, so that the victory of the Atonement could be earned completely by Jesus. Yet, meek Jesus gave the glory to His Father."
